Review: Year of Yes

Posted on March 16, 2018 by GPL

Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand In the Sun, and Be Your Own Person
by Shonda Rhimes
5 stars

“You never say yes to anything.”  These were the words Shonda Rhimes’ sister muttered to her one Thanksgiving.  These six words caused the creator of Grey’s Anatomy to rethink her life and to challenge herself to a new way of living.  Rhimes describes herself as a life-long nerdy introvert who often would shy away from new experiences.  She decides to commit to a full year of saying yes.  She’ll say yes to experiences that scare her, to putting herself first, and to saying no when needed.

This is a fun, inspiring read about a woman working to grow and improve herself.  Fans of Rhimes’ shows will love some of the behind-the-scenes descriptions, but there’s plenty here for readers who have never heard of the famed TV writer.  Highly recommended!

Review: The Sins of Lord Lockwood

Posted on March 13, 2018 by GPL

The Sins of Lord Lockwood
by Meredith Duran
4 stars

Meredith Duran is a romance writing master! Her characters and prose always pull my heartstrings…but luckily there’s always a happy ending. Her latest, The Sins of Lord Lockwood, tells the story of Anna and Liam during the Victorian era. They married four years ago, but Liam disappeared on their wedding night. We gather he was abducted and transported to Australia. But Anna, believing he married her for her money only and not what she thought was a budding love, assumes he left her after getting some of her money.
She reads of Liam’s return in the newspaper, leaves her Scottish island, and confronts Liam in London. Eventually she learns of the horrors he’s endured and helps him in his quest for revenge despite his attempts to push her away. The book is sprinkled with flashbacks that beautifully describe their courtship years earlier. If you’re looking for adventure, romance, and revenge in your next book, I highly recommend it.

Have you met lynda?

Posted on March 9, 2018 by GPL

A new online learning option is now offered at GPL. Lynda.com is an online learning site that hosts a constantly growing library of over 3,000 courses that include over 130,000 videos. Courses cover a variety of topics (including business, design, web development, and multimedia skills) and software (Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, and open source applications) that can help you pursue personal and professional goals. These courses are delivered by expert instructors and feature searchable transcripts that make it easy to find quick answers to questions.

Anyone with a GPL Evergreen Indiana library card will have access to the full collection of online tutorials.

“We are excited to offer Lynda.com for patrons to use 24/7,” stated reference librarian Susan Jerger. “They can learn about QuickBooks, animation, coding, Microsoft Office, marketing, and dozens of other topics through 130,000+ video tutorials on Lynda.com…all from the comfort of their own homes. We aren’t able to offer classes on all those topics and the classes we do offer don’t always work time-wise for a patron, so Lynda.com fills a learning gap in our community.”

For access to lynda.com, visit our website www.greenwoodlibrary.us. Users will need their library card number and pin to login.
