Your Next Favorite Book | Subscription Box

Posted on May 9, 2019 by GPL

Have you heard of OwlCrate?  Or Fab Fit Fun?  Or Loot Crate?  Not familiar?  A subscription box is a paid packaged experience – a monthly delivery of cool stuff in a box.  And we’re super excited to announce our very own GPL subscription box…but it’s FREE!

Here at GPL, we’re always looking for fun ways to connect readers with our collection of books.  Thus was born the idea of a book “subscription” box, a personalized connection between YOU the reader and US, your friendly neighborhood librarians.  We want to help you find “YOUR NEXT FAVORITE BOOK”, and we know it’s in the library’s collection!

So how will this subscription box thing work?

First – Fill out the registration form located here.
When you register, you’re eligible for a 2 month subscription.  We have enough boxes for 10 adult and 10 teen readers at a time.  Not one of the first 10 to sign up?  No worries!  We’ll add you to the waiting list and let you know when it’s your turn.

Second – Complete the “What’s your reading style?” quiz we’ll send you in a welcome email.
We want to get to know you a little better!  We’ll hand-pick a title from our collection for you to read based on your reading tastes.

Third – Pick up your box!
On the 1st Monday of the month, your box will be available for pick-up at the 2nd floor Help Desk.

Now for the fun …you won’t know what we’ve picked out for you!  When you get home, you’ll get the awesomely exciting experience of opening the box to see.  Along with the book, you’ll also receive 2-3 FREE goodies to keep.

Okay, that sounds easy and all, but what’s inside the box?

Every box will include :

  • A specially selected book from our collection chosen according to your personal reading style
  • 2-3 fun bits of swag you get to keep (ex. candy, buttons, bookmarks, fun socks, keychains, etc.)
  • A “What did you think?” card to let us know how we’re doing on selecting titles just for YOU
  • And an activity to make your reading experience interactive (maybe a photo challenge, recipe, or craft idea!)

And just to make the box even more FUN…

If you return the book, Review & Evaluation card, and the box by the 4th Monday of the month (don’t forget, you get to keep the swag!), you’ll receive a FREE book at the end of your subscription.

At the end of your 2 months, you can participate again by filling out the register form!

Young Hoosier Book Award

Posted on May 2, 2019 by GPL

It is my honor to be able to serve on the Young Hoosier Book Award Committee again this year for the intermediate level books. Every year a group of teachers and librarians read through about 80 newly published books and then get together in September to select the 20 titles they believe children in grades 4-6 will enjoy reading. Unlike the Newbery Award which tends to look at different criteria, these books are selected with an eye towards recreational reading. Students in grades 4-6 across the state read at least five of the twenty books on the list and then vote for the one they enjoyed the most by May 1st.

The last two years both winners have been graphic novels: Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson and Smile by Raina Telgemeier. Grades K-2nd grade read 12 of the 20 picture books and then cast their votes. Winners for the past two years have been: Tuesday Tucks Me In by Luis Montalvan and Dog Vs. Cat by Chris Gall.

Look at the past winners of YHBA to find some excellent “KID CHOICE” books: https://tinyurl.com/y3pfw64

Next year’s books are found at: https://tinyurl.com/y3jr4fkp

Exploration Stations: A New Adventure at GPL

Posted on April 25, 2019 by GPL

Hello, Miss Katherine here! I lead our Jump Start program aimed at babies and toddlers, and Miss Anne leads our Smart Start program aimed at preschoolers. This summer, we are launching Exploration Stations.

One of the most common pieces of feedback we get is that people want more programming. We each lead 7 storytimes a week, and have been trying to find a way to meet that need while also keeping up the same quality and reliability. Starting in June, we will offer drop-in, caregiver-led rooms full of our favorite activities. All of the items are curated to support your child’s physical and mental development, with a focus on early literacy, STEAM concepts, sensory exploration, and play.

Miss Anne’s preschoolers already have a wonderful activity room – this will be very similar, but will be open longer and also available on Fridays.

For our two-year-olds, this will also be a familiar concept – it will be similar to the activity room we already have. Our Terrific Twos storytime program will now be separate and unique from the Baby/Toddler, a development that I am so excited about. And we’re packing the activity room full of toys and materials suitable for a wider age range, from babies through two-year-olds. Rather than just being offered to Terrific Two’s participants, the space will be open to everyone under three. It will be open during and after storytime, perfect if you want the opportunity to extend storytime.

We’re so excited, and we hope you join us in June to experience the fun!

Jump Start Exploration Stations will be open Wednesday and Thursday, 9:30-1 and Friday, 11:30-3

Smart Start Exploration Stations will be open Wednesday – Friday, 11:30-3

Review: Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln

Posted on April 22, 2019 by GPL

Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln
by Doris Kearns Goodwin
4 stars

I’ve heard about Team of Rivals for years ever since it spent weeks and weeks on The New York Times bestsellers list after it was published in 2005. It was also the inspiration for the 2012 film Lincoln starring Daniel Day-Lewis that I enjoyed immensely. When I needed to pick a Civil War related book for the March History Roundtable meeting, I immediately looked to see if it was available as a downloadable audiobook. Thankfully, the eIndiana Digital Consortium has it in both abridged (7 or so hours) and unabridged (40+ hours) formats. I went for the unabridged version narrated by the author herself.

Goodwin does an excellent job reading her brilliant book. I was left even more enamored of Abraham Lincoln’s intellect and leadership and developed an appreciation for his compassion for his fellow man and his immense wit. I was left to mourn what could have been if Lincoln had lived through his 2nd term. Though a long book, it never felt tedious. Highly recommended for history buffs and anyone slightly interested in American history.
