Reading Resources for the Vision Impaired

Posted on August 17, 2020 by GPL

Do you have a vision impairment? Or perhaps a loved one? The Indiana Talking Books & Braille Library (TBBL) is a fabulous free resource available to Hoosier living with a vision or physical impairment that makes reading standard printed materials difficult. All one has to do is fill out an application and have a medical professional or librarian verify the reading impairment. Once you are in the program, you can have Large Print books, audiobooks, and/or Braille materials mailed to you with free return shipping included. This has been a wonderful service for a dear family friend of mine who has macular degeneration. Find more information and an application at https://www.in.gov/library/tbbl.htm.

Another helpful resource is WFYI’s Indiana Reading and Information Services (IRIS). It is available for anyone with a visual, physical, or learning disability who would like to hear local and national newspapers, magazines, and other community information read aloud. My father-in-law volunteers each week to read The Reader’s Digest for IRIS listeners. If you don’t need the service, consider volunteering to read for those who do. Visit https://www.wfyi.org/iris-reading-services for a list of publications and more info.

Don’t Forget to Vote

Posted on July 29, 2020 by GPL

One hundred years ago this year the 19th amendment was passed and women throughout the entire country could vote for the first time. My mind boggles to think not that long ago, less than half the age of our country, I couldn’t have voted in Indiana due to no fault of my own.

I don’t want to take this right for granted and plan to vote in the upcoming general election on November 3rd. Indiana has a wonderful voter portal at https://indianavoters.in.gov/ for anyone who needs to check voting status, register to vote, find out who’s on your ballot, or apply to vote by mail (absentee).  Keep these deadlines in mind:

Voter Registration – October 5th

Absentee Ballot Application – October 22nd by 11:59pm

If you’re unsure who your current elected officials are, you can type in your address on http://wayeo.egis.39dn.com/ and find every level of government.

Don’t forget to vote on November 3rd!

Belly Laughs with Safety Last

Posted on June 29, 2020 by GPL

I grew up assuming all black and white movies were boring. Fortunately, through my movie buff husband I’ve learned the error of my ways. I’ve now seen Sunset Boulevard, High Noon, Casablanca, and Arsenic and Old Lace to name a few, and enjoyed them all.

The biggest surprise delight for me was Harold Lloyd’s Safety Last!. I, of course, new Charlie Chaplin was a famous silent film star, but apparently there were loads more including Harold Lloyd.

Safety Last! is a cute romcom about a young man who leaves his small town for the big city. He wants to earn enough money to marry the sweetheart he left behind but finds that’s not as easy of a task as he’d hoped. My young son and I, both skeptics of an old silent film that was made nearly 100 years ago, watched it with my husband recently. We laughed out loud numerous times watching Lloyd’s antics. In fact, I’d never heard my son do deep belly laughs watching a movie. Listening to him and watching the movie was a double pleasure.

If you’re in need of a fun family movie, I highly recommend watching Safety Last!. A benefit of it being from 1923: it’s in the public domain! You can find it for free to view on YouTube:

Have you met Lynda?

Posted on May 12, 2020 by GPL

Lynda.com is a great (free!) resource you can use to improve your professional and personal skills. I’ve had family members use it learn about coding and digital photography. I’ve found it very helpful for brushing up on my tech skills including Microsoft Excel and Zoom…you may have heard of that online meeting platform of late :).

To use Lynda.com for free with your GPL Evergreen Indiana library card, you do have to follow a few steps:

  1. Start at the library’s homepage: www.greenwoodlibrary.us
  2. Next click on the yellow and black Lynda.com button below the slide show OR click on Find Stuff on the top left, swing over to the Research column, and then Online Databases. Scroll down the alphabetical list to Lynda.com and click the image or the link.
  3. Type in your Library Card barcode and PIN. If you don’t know your PIN…which is the same as the password you use to log into Evergreen to place holds and do renewals, contact us.
  4. On the welcome page: click I’ve had an account if you’ve used Lynda in the past and want to transfer previous course history and certificates of completion OR click No, I’ve never had an account and then enter your name and email address. Click Save.
  5. Now you’re ready to look for courses! Near the top, you can browse the Lynda library to find a skill you’d like to learn or improve or do keyword searching in the search box.
  6. If you find a course you’re interested in, be sure to add it to your Playlist so you can find it easily in the future.

Happy learning!

Review: Pride, Prejudice, and Other Flavors

Posted on June 12, 2019 by GPL

Pride, Prejudice, and Other Flavors
by Sonali Dev
4 stars

I greatly enjoyed Sonali Dev’s twist on Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Dev introduces to the aristocratic Raje family through the youngest daughter, Trisha. She is our Mr. Darcy in this gender flipped version with DJ Caine, a master chef from a poor background, playing Elizabeth’s role. Dev includes lots and humor and sweetness with the right mix of tart. Trisha, a talented surgeon, is set on saving DJ’s younger sister’s life after the sister is diagnosed with a brain tumor. An awkward first meeting between our protagonists, followed by (you guess it!) misunderstandings, roughly follow the original plot. I spent a little too much time trying to pick out who was whom from Pride and Prejudice, but I eventually focused more on Trisha and DJ’s own story. I’m looking forward to the next entry in Dev’s Raje family series…perhaps a new take on Sense and Sensibility is headed our way!
