Are we there yet?

Posted on July 13, 2020 by GPL

We’ve all been there.  You’re going to the beach for a nice, relaxing week-long vacation.  The only problem is we live in the Midwest and the beach is several hours away by car.  How do you keep the kids occupied without driving you crazy by constantly asking, “Are we there yet?”

I recently cataloged a new children’s book titled Sleuth & Solve by Victor Escandell.  It features 20 mind-twisting mysteries that can be solved using either logic or imagination.  The author included instructions to turn each mystery into a game.  One person will be the Investigation Director and will read the mystery to the other players.

Here’s one example using imagination:

“Marco lives and works in his home by the sea where he has lived alone for many years.  His life is very routine, and each night before going to bed he turns on the light.  But one night Marco is so tired that he forgets to turn on the light.  When he wakes in the morning, he hears terrible news.  Marco is distraught, and then runs straight to the police to confess his guilt.  Why is Marco at fault?”

The answer is under a flap that only the Investigation Director can see.  Now the other players have an opportunity to ask questions that require a yes or no answer, and they continue to do this until someone comes up with the correct answer.

Younger children will enjoy any one of Walter Wick’s and Jean Marzollo’s I Spy books.  They have at least a dozen different books, but I Spy Treasure Hunt is one of my personal favorites.  Marzollo has written rhymes which provide clues, and Wick has created detailed miniature villages which provide answers.  Children can be captivated for hours looking at these delightful pictures.

What an awesome way to engage the entire family!  Playing a game like this is going to make the hours in the car fly by, and you’ll be running in the surf and soaking up the sun before you know it.

Reluctant Readers

Posted on June 15, 2020 by GPL

It’s summer and we really want to keep the kids reading so they don’t experience the “Summer Slide” (when academic skills decline without practice). Some children just love to read and it’s hard to keep them out of a book – but for many others, it’s like pulling teeth to motivate them. Reading is very challenging for many students so you have to be strategic in finding materials that will entice them to read. Books that we have found to be popular are: the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, Captain Underpants series (and anything by Dav Pilkey), graphic novels like Smile and Baby Mouse. Nonfiction titles that draw kids in are books that contain short interesting factual information like Ripley’s Believe it or Not andGuinness World Records.  Joke books are a great immediate gratification read. Many boys like war books and we have a plethora of these in graphic novel format. Two of our hottest series are the I Survived series by Lauren Tarshis which covers exciting times throughout history and the You Wouldn’t Want to Be series which has a fun, factual, easy-to-read boxed layout.

A tip that has worked well for me: READ TOGETHER. I will read a page and the child will read the next page aloud or perhaps only the next paragraph. In this way the child is not overwhelmed by the text and by hearing the story and discussing the story together, vocabulary and comprehension are enhanced. Also, don’t count out audio books! The slogan, “Audio Books are Not Cheating” is TRUE! Children gain vocabulary, comprehension, and background information from listening to audio books! This choice is especially wonderful for family vacations! GPL has a wide selection of wonderful audio books and my most recent favorite is Restart by Gordon Korman which just won the YHBA Intermediate Award!

Emily’s Top 5 Quarantine Reads

Posted on May 24, 2020 by GPL

Time at home with nothing much to do is sort of a booklover’s dream.  I had high reading hopes for my time social distancing – so much time, so many books brought home from the library and filling my personal bookshelves.  Did I read as much as I thought I would?  Not really, no.  But there were a few books that I did read that quickly made it to my top reads of 2020 (and maybe all-time) reading list.

Emily’s Top 5 Quarantine Reads

#5: A Stroke of Malice (A Lady Darby Mystery #8)
by Anna Lee Huber

This is one of my favorite ongoing series.  Set in England and Scotland, it follows the escapades of Lady Kiera Darby, an artist and former wife of a renowned anatomist, who now spends her time solving murders with the dashing Sebastian Gage.  Bucking cultural norms and standing firm in her beliefs, Kiera is a force to be reckoned with and the last person you would want to stumble upon a dead body at a holiday party.

#4: Aurora Rising (The Aurora Cycle #1)
by Jay Kristoff and Amie KaufmanThis was a re-read to prep for the recently released Aurora Burning. Kristoff and Kaufman are masters of writing science fiction with dynamic character, thrilling suspense, snappy dialogue.  The Aurora Cycle follows Squad 312, recent graduates of the Aurora Academy, as they discover a force that is threatening the entire galaxy…and they may just be everyone’s last hope.

#3: The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep
by H.G. ParryNext to space fiction (see above) books about books may just be my favorite literary trope.  H.G. Parry creates a world in which the fictional world is closer than we think.  Charley Sutherland has a unique gift – the ability to read fictional characters into existence.  When he reads Uriah Heep, from Charles Dickens’s classic David Copperfield into our world, he finds himself in the center of a growing war between the fiction and reality.
#2: The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires
by Grady Hendrix

I don’t normally gravitate toward books with a lot of buzz, but the premise of this one just screamed “read me!”  Set in the 90s, the story follows a group of women who find solace from their lives and husbands in their true-crime book club.  When a mysterious man moves in just down the street, the club quickly becomes entangled in conspiracy theories and are convinced he is not quite what he seems.  A bit gory and graphic, Hendrix weaves a story of friendship, loyalty, and resilience.

#1: The House in the Cerulean Sea
by T.J. KluneSo good I read it all in a day.  Linus Baker is a caseworker for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth – an organization that monitors establishments that care for children with magical abilities.  Baker is tasked with evaluating a particular orphanage run by Arthur Parnassus who is raising the antichrist (Lucifer, known as Lucy) and an entourage of other special kids.  Linus discovers that the life he was living wasn’t really life at all, not everyone is as they seem, and sometimes we can choose our family.  This one is filled with heart and humor with special detail given to creating well-rounded, empathetic, complicated characters you fall in love with immediately.

What did you read during quarantine?

Media Mentions on Novelist

Posted on June 19, 2019 by GPL

Do you generally find book recommendations from TV or radio programs?  If so, then you may want to check out a new feature on Novelist!  We don’t have a non-fiction offering for Novelist at GPL, but this is a great tool for fiction books.  If you’d like to learn more about Novelist, feel free to stop by the Library and talk to one of our friendly librarians at the 2nd floor Help Desk.

Check out the new Media Mentions offering below:

If a title has Media Mentions, you will see them in two spots on the book’s detail page, as shown in the image below. The five most recent Media Mentions will appear to the right of the book jacket at the top of the page, and the complete list of mentions can be found on the More About This Book tab.

If you’ve already started a search and want to refine it further to see only titles with Media Mentions, you can narrow your results by choosing “Includes Media Mentions” under Additional Limiters on the left side of the search results page, as shown here:

You can find all Media Mentions or titles that have been featured on a specific program, via Advanced Search:

And finally, you can search for Media Mentions by using field code MM, like this, which would show you all the books that have been featured on any NPR program:
