Summer Reading 2017 is Here!

Posted on May 15, 2017 by GPL

All ages are encouraged to join us from now until July 29th for our newly revamped Summer Reading Program!  Earn points for reading this summer, then use those points to vote on some great community prizes!  So, how does it work?

Record each hour you read this summer.  Track hours on our handy paper reading logs, or with our new online logging system.
Complete missions to earn badges.  What are missions?  They’re a fun, new way to get credit for attending programs, trying new things, and reading different types of books.  Check out our online logging system to what missions are available.

Win prizes by earning badges!  You’ll get a small take home prize for the first few badges, and you’ll win a marble for every badge you earn.  With a marble you can vote on an upcoming program we’ll offer this fall!

Stop by the Children’s, Teen, or Adult Reference desks to get started or register online at www.greenwoodlibrary.us!

We’ll also be celebrating reading all summer long at the library with fun activities and decorations.  Each week we’ll be focusing on a different literary genre.

June 5 – Mysteries

June 12 – Fantasy

June 19 – Realistic Fiction

June 26 – SciFi

July 10 – Non-Fiction

July 17 – Historical Fiction

July 24 – Manga

History Roundtable

Posted on April 1, 2017 by GPL

The library’s brand new History Roundtable series is for any adults with an interest in history. You are in charge…you pick whatever you’d like to read (non-fiction books only), listen to, or watch that matches up with each month’s topic. Then come to the meeting on the 4th Thursday of the month prepared to summarize your book/podcast/documentary and share what you’ve learned with everyone. We’ll learn from each other and see how history applies to our lives today.

April’s topic is very broad…Russian history. You can find a suggested resource list here, or from the list below. Or you can choose whatever you’d like that matches the topic whether it’s about the origin of the Russian empire, Tsarist Russia, peasantry, Rasputin, the Russian Revolution, you name it! Please register in advance by calling 317-885-5036 or visiting www.greenwoodlibrary.us.

Join the Revolution!

Posted on March 1, 2017 by GPL

C.S. Lewis once said, “We read to know we are not alone.”  Opening a book and becoming immersed in a story not only develops the mind but teaches empathy, broadens the imagination, and sparks creativity.  We read to learn, to escape, and to better understand the world around us, but developing reading skills also contributes to economic growth and development.  The Greenwood Public Library’s vision is a community where all citizens are reaching their full potential for success and are enthusiastic about the future, and we believe that literacy can make that vision a reality.

This year we are embarking on a “Reading Revolution,” a strategic initiative to make literacy and reading a topic of conversation throughout all of Greenwood.  Through an up-to-date collection of both print and digital materials, exciting programs, community partnerships, and outreach events specifically focused on literacy based activities, we are excited to make reading a hot topic throughout the city.  Sounds exciting, doesn’t it?  Here are some ways to get involved:

1) Join our 2017 Reading Challenge – we’ve provided the categories, you pick the books!  Challenge yourself to read widely and share what you’re reading.

2) Join a book club – the library has five fun book clubs that will get you involved in the conversation!  Find the one that is the best fit for your reading tastes and join us for a fun discussion.

3) Check out the My Librarians page for fun reading lists cultivated by your friendly neighborhood librarians!  Not sure what to read next?  Have a librarian create a personalized reading list just for you.

4) Explore our “100 Years, 100 Books” lists for kids, teens, and adults!  The librarians have selected 100 books for each age group that come highly recommended.

5)  Coming Soon: “Book Chats” out in our community!  Join us as we visit a community partner and share information on new books, popular books, and books we love.  Or register for our Summer Reading Program in May for a fun two month family reading celebration.

6) Keep up to date with the GPL Blog for great book recommendations and information about the Reading Revolution!
