Fans of Twilight, especially Jacob Black, will enjoy this supernatural star-crossed love story. White the story feels familiar; the writing makes the book stand apart from other novels on vampires and werewolves available for teens today.
When you think of the worst thing that could happen to you on prom night, getting into a car accident and being targeted by a dark reaper with a wicked sword probably doesn’t make the list. Madison Avery didn’t anticipate it either, but just before the reaper could finish her off, she steals an amulet around his neck. Now she’s dead, but stuck on Earth and training with the light reapers. Unfortunately, the dark reaper holds a grudge, and desperately wants his amulet back, the only thing keeping Madison in the land of the living. Just when she thinks things can’t get any worse, her crush is chased by black shadows who want to eat his soul, she gets stuck with a very annoying rhyming guarding angel, and the so called good guys (light reapers) she thought she could trust start to reveal a darker side. Madison Avery really wishes she hadn’t gone to prom.
Once Dead, Twice Shy is a very quick supernatural read. The reaper angle was much different than anything I’ve read in awhile. The back story could have been better developed, but overall, Harrison provides a very fun summer read.
I’ve read my fair share of supernatural books lately, and this one, while not a stand out, has a unique twist. It took me a little while to actually get into it, but I with the plot twist revealed, I couldn’t put it down. Fans of the Twilight series will enjoy the supernatural love story.
